IRS Notice CP53E
IRS Notice Regarding Direct Deposit – IRS Notice CP53E
If you receive an IRS notice titled “IRS Notice CP53E” with the subject line “We couldn’t direct deposit your (tax year) Form 1040 refund”, this is a legitimate letter from the IRS. It means your tax return was adjusted, and you are now due a refund, even if your original tax return that was filed shows an amount due. This can be generated for many reasons, one of which might be that you were determined to be in federal disaster area and they reduced a late payment penalty.
If you get this notice, you can do nothing and will receive a paper check in about 6 weeks or so. Or you can follow the instructions to provide a bank account to the IRS to deposit your refund via direct deposit. The IRS is refraining from issuing paper checks in certain scenarios. You can go to the link in the letter or use the QR code in your letter. You will need to create an account with ID.me if you do not already have one. Step-by-step instructions are below.
